POSITION DESCRIPTION

CertainTeed Gypsum operates a surface quarry in Nashville, Arkansas to supply the required gypsum to the adjacent wallboard plant. As part of the mine staff, the Mine Surveyor/Geologist role ensures that the quarry operations are managed and development is the highest standards of safety, quality, efficiency/planning, and cost—delivering optimum raw gypsum to the Nashville Board Plant in a sustainable way. The successful candidate will monitor the mining and continuous miner operation and work with the mine management involving quarry support activities such as surveying, overburden removal, ground control and mine dewatering. The Geologist/Surveyor will maintain up to date mine surveys, observe geologic formations, drill core holes, and supervise rock quality tests in order to develop the daily, weekly and longer term mining plans. From the derived data, geological and topography maps will be plotted for use in medium to long term planning.  Best practices, SOP’s, SMP’s, job instructions and continuous improvement projects will be defined by the job holder using the principles of WCM.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES

  • To ensure that the highest standards of safety are delivered, fully commensurate and complaint to local, national and company standards—ensuring a clean, safe and orderly work area.
  • Provide technical and geological guidance to the Mine Lead regarding mine planning and sequencing.
  • Observe exposed gypsum strata, take samples, and drill core sample holes as required.
  • Record and map the results of the quarry lab.
  • Perform staking activates to visualize the digging extents of digging sequences for equipment operators.
  • Provide geological, topographic, and rock quality information and contour maps to the mine manager and provide weekly, monthly and annual mining plans for the Mine Manager’s approval.
  • Identify continuous improvement opportunities in the operations of the Nashville Quarry.
  • Provide leadership to process improvement teams utilizing the WCM tool box for continuous improvement and the reduction of losses.
  • Provide surveying and mapping services as required by the Nashville operations.
  • Develop and coordinate writing and review of SOP’s, SMP’s, and job instructions for the Nashville mining operation on the tools, and techniques ensuring effective deployment of best practices.
  • Track key performance indicator (KPI’s) relative to rock quality, the surface miner and screen operation which are communicated to mine and plant staff.
  • Advise and report on geo-hazard observations and inspections.
  • Provide guidelines for water management related to dewatering and effective surface water drainage.
  • Check daily reports against survey volume results and track overburden measurements.

OTHER DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • To coordinate mine activities with the Mine Lead and rock shed blending, including stockpiles inventory.
  • Planning and field assistance for exploration programs (upgrade reserves in Job location areas).
  • Co-operate with the Mine Management in developing strategic and corporate key projects.
  • Other associated duties as directed on an as needed basis.

In cooperation with the Mine Lead, insures that all quarry activities support the goals of short, medium, and long term mine efficiency and planning.  In cooperation with the Mine Lead, insures that the rock shed is supplied with appropriate rock quality for blending, insures that rock and overburden volumes are correctly surveyed and reported.

WORKING CONDITIONS
May be exposed to industrial solvents and lubricants. Mining and manufacturing environment includes working in conditions of heat and cold with exposure to dusty and loud noise situations, commensurate and normal to mining and industrial situations. Ability to physically cross uneven ground and pile of loose rock with required equipment and samples in adverse weather conditions.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS
Operation of general use off road light vehicles. Walking, climbing, bending over and stooping repetitively. Ability to lift 50 pounds at regular intervals. Requires wearing personal protection equipment as mandated.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
  • 4 Year Degree in related field (Surveying, Geology, Mining, or Civil Engineering).  Equivalent training and experience of a technical nature and clear demonstration of success in similar business function may substitute for a degree.
  • 1 to 3 years of experience surveying
  • 1 to 3 years of experience in mineral exploitation or mapping of reserves.
  • Subject matter expertise in the various principles and practices:
    • Strong understanding of surveying techniques
    • Geology and understanding rock strata
    • Sampling techniques, lab test procedures and statistical analysis
    • Survey instrumentation and mapping
    • Computer applications related to mapping, GIS, AutoCAD and Microsoft Office Suite
    • Focused Improvement/Practical Problem Solving
    • Quality and Process Control techniques
    • Other Continuous Improvement principles (e.g., Lean Manufacturing, Six Sigma, etc.)
  • The job demands a good level of:

PREFERRED OR DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Minimum 5 year’s prior minerals exploitation and surveying experience strongly preferred
