The (DHS)/Self Sufficiency Programs is seeking (1) Benefit and Eligibility Worker to join our team in Enterprise!

What you will be doing
The purpose of the Benefit and Eligibility Worker is to assist the agency mission of poverty prevention and family engagement by accurately determining eligibility for programs provided by Self Sufficiency program which include Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), Temporary Assistance to Needy Families (TANF), and Employment Related Day Care (ERDC).  This includes coding the appropriate systems to deliver benefits as determined by the eligibility of the applicant.  This is accomplished by conducting interviews, reviewing verifications and interpreting policy and rules.

You will be part of dynamic team charged with determining initial eligibility for TANF, Domestic Violence services, SNAP, Medical and Employment Related Day Care. This position interviews applicants in person, by phone, or in applicant's home to gather information needed to assess and determine if there is a need for services and benefits.

These employment opportunities are with the Oregon Department of Human Services/Self Sufficiency Programs. There is ONE, permanent full-time opening in Enterprise (104 Litch St.).  This position are represented by a union.

WORKING CONDITIONS
The employee's work is conducted in offices, customers' homes and other program sites. Work can require travel, including overnight. Employee has contact with a range of people including some exhibiting anger and frustration. Customers could be drug or alcohol affected and/or in need of treatment. The employee will exposed to a range of emotionally charged issues and will need to respond professionally, confronting when necessary.

The work schedule for this position will be determined by business need. Also based on business
need, this position may be relocated to other offices or to out stationed sites within the district.

Office environment with heating, ventilation and air conditioning. Limited physical exertion. May
require sitting at a terminal or telephone for prolonged periods of the work day.

This is what you need to qualify:
Two years of experience determining eligibility for an agency program by interviewing to assess the needs of customer, and interpreting and applying the policies, rules, and guidelines that are applicable to the customer's situation.

Any college courses may be substituted for the two years of general experience on a year-for-year basis (45 quarter hours is equivalent to one year of experience). A photocopy of your transcripts must be attached to your application materials if using college courses to meet the minimum qualifications.

  • Skill in making decisions concerning eligibility for government assistance programs.
    Skill in making decisions and resolving problems using independent judgment.
  • Strong  customer service skills
  • Ability to de-escalate emotionally charged situations.
  • Skill in prioritizing work to accomplish both ongoing and emergent duties.
  • Verbal and written communication with applicants.
  • Skill in working with frequent interruptions.
  • Skill in using and/or operating office equipment (i.e., personal computers, calculators, and computer terminals).
  • Knowledge of community resources serving the needs of agency applicants and clients.
