The Outdoor Education Assistant Manager is responsible for assisting the Coastal Discovery Center manager in successfully running OMSI Outdoor School programming at Camp Meriwether. This position is also responsible for coordinating and implementing programs, updating and developing curriculum, assisting with summer planning, and providing administrative and logistical support for the OMSI's outdoor program during the rest of the year. The position requires living on-site at Camp Meriwether, outside of Tillamook, Oregon, during spring outdoor school; housing is not provided during summer, fall and winter and requires being based in Portland, Oregon. Traveling between all OMSI locations is required.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities:
"Performing the following will involve driving to various locations outside OMSI's corporate headquarters:"
- Coordinate day-to-day operations of OMSI Outdoor Science Education programs for spring Outdoor School at Camp Meriwether.
- Coordinate summer logistics, create, implement, and update curriculum, as well as provide support for programming at the Coastal Discovery Center at Camp Gray and Hancock Field Station.
- Assist with the hiring, training, supervision, guidance and evaluation of summer camp counselors.
- Work with Coastal Discovery Center Manager to plan instructor training in the spring.
- Ensure that camp equipment and program supplies are properly maintained, organized, inventoried, restocked, repaired, and cleaned.
- Recognize, mitigate, and respond to hazards to ensure a healthy and safe program for all participants.
- Fulfill assigned duties in an emergency situation.
- Drive participants to field locations throughout programming.
- Clean teaching spaces, cabins, staff housing, and restrooms at the end of each teaching week.
- This position is exempt, paid salaried
- This position is regular full-time, scheduled for 40 hours/week.
Working and Living Conditions:
- Requires on-site living, including shared staff quarters, during spring outdoor school and when assigned to work at the Coastal Discovery Center at Camp Gray and Hancock Field Station.
- Required to travel between all OMSI locations an average of 1-2 times a month.
- Room and board provided when assigned to work at Camp Meriwether, the Coastal Discovery Center at Camp Gray, and Hancock Field Station during days with programming; room only during non-programming days when scheduled at a camp location; no room and board when scheduled at the Water Avenue location.
- Typical program days are 10-12 hours in length. Non-program workdays are 6-8 hours in length. Weekend programming can occasionally make for 12 straight days of work without a full day off. (American Camp Association time off standards will be met (2 hours off daily, and 24 hours or more off each two-week block).
- Must be physically able to lead students in hikes of up to 10 miles in a day.
- Must be able to drive large vehicles, sometimes towing trailers, for up to 4 hours at a time.
- Work environment includes open flames, toxic or caustic chemicals, and all-season outdoor weather conditions.
- Must have visual, perceptual, cognitive and judgment ability to: recognize and respond verbally to health and safety concerns and to deal appropriately with any improper behavior.
- Vision requirements include close vision (clear vision at 20 inches or less), distance vision (clear vision at 20 feet or more), color vision (the ability to recognize the colors of traffic signals and devices showing standard red, green, and amber), peripheral vision (ability to observe an area that can be seen up and down or to the left or right while eyes are fixed on a given point), depth and perception (three dimensional vision, ability to judge distance and spatial relationships), and ability to adjust focus (ability to adjust the eyes to bring an object into sharp focus).
- Noise level is very quiet (examples: forest trail, isolation booth for hearing test) to loud (examples: metal can manufacturing department, large earth-moving equipment).
- Physical Demands: 5% Sitting, 30% Standing, 20% Walking, 45% Lifting/Carrying/Pushing/Pulling Pounds 5 - 80 lbs.
- Responsible for site safety and general operations when the manager is not present.
- Requires calm and professional conflict resolution with participants and peers.
- Assist with writing camp-specific summer camps catalog copy and informational summer program packets.
- Provide first aid care to participants and staff when necessary.
- Incorporate and orient adult chaperones and teachers into the program as teaching assistants who are also learners.
- Occasionally teach field studies, interest groups, and evening programs.
- Assist with instructor and cook hiring, and other office management duties, as assigned by the manager.
- Plan and perform campfires with instructors and counselors.
- Work with, schedule, and support volunteers.
- Act as a liaison between group leaders, teachers, area organizations, OMSI registrar, and the Camp Meriwether staff for programming, scheduling, and program follow-up.
- Provide logistics and facility support in rotation with peers, which includes driving, food service, minor site and vehicle maintenance, cleaning and other tasks deemed necessary for successful camp operation by the manager.
- Working knowledge of the concepts in natural history and ecology.
- Working knowledge of current trends in outdoor science education, experiential education philosophies, and outdoor teaching practices.

Education & Work Experience:
- Bachelor's Degree in natural science, education or environmental studies or equivalent combination of work experience and education.
- Minimum 7 months' leadership, supervisory, or management experience.
- Minimum 7 months of program coordination and/or project management.
- Minimum15 months of experience working with youth in an informal education setting.
- Minimum10 month year of formal or informal experience in teaching science related topics.
- Documented experience in leading backpacking trips.
- Documented experience working with youth in an outdoor residential educational setting.
- Master's Degree in Natural Sciences or Education.
- Teaching Certificate.
- Bilingual Spanish/English or Japanese/English.
- Documented experience working with volunteers.
