Structural Welder/Fitter - Big Lake, AK



Plans, lays out, positions, aligns, and fits together fabricated parts of structural metal products. Welds, tacks and assembles together metal components of products such as modules, structural steel, pipe racks and plate welding with electric arc-welding equipment by performing the following duties.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

+ Obtains specified electrode and inserts electrode into portable holder or threads consumable electrode wire through portable welding gun.

+ Connects cables from welding unit to obtain amperage, voltage, slope, and pulse, as specified by Welding Engineer or Welding Technician.

+ Starts power supply to produce electric current.

+ Strikes (forms) arc which generates heat to melt and deposit metal from electrode to work piece and join edges of work piece.

+ Manually guides electrode or gun along weld line, maintaining length of arc and speed of movement to form specified depth of fusion and bead, as judged from color of metal, sound of weld, and size of molten puddle.

+ Welds in flat, horizontal, vertical, or overhead positions.

+ Examines weld for bead size and other specifications.

+ Applies filler rod manually to supply weld metal

+ Cleans or degreases weld joint or work piece.

+ Repairs broken or cracked parts and fills holes.

+ Prepares broken parts for welding by grooving or scaring surfaces.

+ Chips off excess weld, slag, and spatter.

+ Preheats work piece with hand torch or heating furnace.

+ Positions and clamps work pieces together or assembles them in jig or fixture.

+ Plans sequence of operation and sets up face block, jigs and fixtures.

+ Locates and marks centerlines and reference points onto floor or face block and transposes them to work piece.

+ Aligns and moves parts into position.

+ Removes high spots and cuts bevels.

+ Straightens warped or bent parts.

+ Positions or tightens braces, jacks, clamps, ropes, or bolt straps, or bolts parts in positions for welding or riveting.

+ Uses transit to locate reference points and erects ladders and scaffolding to fit together large assemblies.

+ Other duties as assigned.

+ Structural Welder has no supervisory responsibilities.



+ High school diploma or General Education Degree (GED) required.

+ Minimum five (5) years welder/fitter experience required.

+ Wire feed flux core welding experience required.

+ Must be able to pass weld test flat, vertical, and overhead.

+ Must be able to work in a fast pace environment.

While performing the duties of this Job, the employee is regularly exposed to high, precarious places; outside weather conditions and extreme cold. The employee is frequently exposed to moving mechanical parts. The noise level in the work environment is usually very loud.

The employee is occasionally required to sit. Steel toed boots are required on the job.

The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 100 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus.
