The Campus Safety Officer is responsible for the safety and security of College property, facilities, students, personnel, and visitors.  The Officer is responsible for responding to and addressing safety and security-related concerns (both emergencies and the routine) and ensuring that College and department policies and procedures are followed.


Bennington’s Campus Safety approach is one of harm and risk-reduction, and is focused on finding the learning moments possible in any given interaction and honoring student growth and development.  This approach is applied to all aspects of student engagement including all policy enforcement and general service requests. The position is full-time, year-round and offers a comprehensive benefits package.


General Responsibilities:



  • Protect and provide assistance to students, faculty, staff and visitors/guests.  Use appropriate judgment to ensure adherence to College policies and procedures while promoting a positive, cooperative, congenial atmosphere.  
  • Protect College property from crime, fire, vandalism and accidents.  Perform safety patrols in vehicle and on foot. Secure buildings and property. Enforce safety, traffic, and parking regulations.
  • Report problems observed or informed of to the appropriate department.
  • Provide timely response to service calls including, but not limited to, transportation or escort assistance, security service calls, and vehicle assistance.  
  • Act as a First Responder during emergencies and serve as the liaison between the College and outside agencies such as law enforcement, fire, or EMS.  
  • As needed, investigate incidents and draft report of findings.  

Qualifications


Candidates should possess a high school degree or equivalent.  Experience in higher education, campus safety and/or policy enforcement is preferred. This position requires a valid driver’s license and candidates should possess or be willing to obtain certifications in First Aid and Adult CPR with AED. Strong verbal and written communication skills are necessary, including the ability to negotiate and resolve conflict and to communicate effectively with individuals at all levels of the organization. Candidates must have the ability to maintain a calm and supportive demeanor and a high level of professionalism and confidentiality at all times. Ability to use computer technology (gmail/email and other programs as needed) and ability to adapt to and use changing technology is required. Candidates should work well in a collaborative environment, possess excellent organizational skills, as well as have the ability to set priorities and multi-task in a fast-paced setting. Must have a high attention to detail and be able to work independently with limited supervision.      


Successful completion of a background/DMV check will be required.


Working conditions and physical demands


This position works both inside and outdoors and may be exposed to inclement weather, extreme temperatures and unpredictable situations.  Work requires walking for extended periods of time to conduct patrols as well as standing, bending, reaching, stooping, climbing stairs, and driving.  Work may involve strenuous physical activity/contact.
